Before you go

Your checklist in Turkey

  1. Your residence permit approved and a valid passport.
  2. Documents in one folder: birth and marriage certificates, diplomas; certified translations where needed.
  3. Money for the start: a deposit (at most 6 months' rent), the first rent and a few weeks of living costs.
  4. English and Norwegian: they help a lot at work and every day.
  5. Set up your home TV before you go, so it works on day one (how to watch Turkish TV in Norway).

Home TV, ready when you land

The first weeks abroad are the hardest. The news from home, your series and the kids' cartoons in Turkish make the new flat feel like home faster.

Your checklist in Norway

  1. Residence card: book a police appointment to get your residence card.
  2. ID check (Skatteetaten): your Norwegian ID number and tax card (skattekort).
  3. Bank account: you usually need a Norwegian ID number.
  4. Doctor: people living in Norway have a right to a regular GP (fastlege).
  5. TV fee: Norway has none since 2020.
  6. Driving: you can drive on a Turkish licence for 3 months after you arrive (up to 6 with a residence permit and a job contract); it cannot be exchanged, so you need a Norwegian licence.
